Best time to visit the Maldives

The Maldives has two clear seasons. November to April is the dry north-east monsoon — calm seas, clear skies, consistent sun, and the most reliable weather for an overwater honeymoon. May to October is the wetter south-west monsoon, with more cloud and short tropical squalls, but exceptional diving (whale sharks, manta rays at Hanifaru Bay) and rates 25–40% lower.

The best time to visit the Maldives is November to April — the dry season with calm seas, clear skies and consistent sun. May to October is the wet season (south-west monsoon), with more rain, better diving for whale sharks and mantas, and 25–40% lower rates.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Maldives good in June?

Yes — June is firmly wet season but most days are sunny with short tropical squalls. Rates are 30% below peak, and overwater villa upgrades become affordable.

When should we book for Christmas?

12–15 months ahead. The best villas at Cheval Blanc, Soneva, Four Seasons and Six Senses sell out a year ahead for Christmas/New Year.

Is January or February better?

Both excellent. February is marginally drier and warmer; January is slightly busier post-New Year.

What's the worst time to go?

Late April and May — peak heat, season transition, occasional storms without the full wet-season value.
