Where to go on a luxury holiday in January

January is one of the strongest months in the luxury travel calendar. The Maldives, Seychelles, Mauritius, Caribbean and Thailand are all in peak dry season, the Sabi Sand and Cape Town are at their summer best, and the southern Serengeti is calving. The trade-off is price — Christmas/New Year carries on into the first week, and the second half of January is the year's most reliable winter-sun window.

January is peak season for the Maldives, the Caribbean, Thailand and South Africa — long-haul winter sun is at its most reliable.

Frequently asked questions

Where's warmest in January?

The Maldives, Seychelles and Mauritius all average 28–31°C with very low rainfall. The Caribbean is reliably 26–29°C and dry.

Is January good for safari?

Excellent in southern Tanzania (Serengeti calving) and South Africa (green-season Sabi Sand, plus Cape Town). Kenya is also viable, between the short rains and the long rains.

Can we ski and beach in the same trip?

Yes — pair a week in Verbier, St Anton or Courchevel with a Dubai or Maldives finale. Both are flight-connectable inside 7–9 hours from the Alps.
