May is widely considered the best month of the year by luxury travel specialists. Southern Europe — Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal — is in full bloom, warm enough for the sea but not yet crowded. The Botswana and Zambia dry seasons open. Japan moves into clear, comfortable spring. Patagonia is closed, the Maldives shifts to shoulder, but virtually everywhere else in the northern hemisphere is at its loveliest.
May is the European sweet spot — Greece, Italy and Spain at their warm-but-uncrowded best, plus the start of the African dry season.
