Courchevel vs Val d'Isère

Courchevel 1850 and Val d'Isère are the two great French luxury ski resorts. Both sit in enormous ski areas (Trois Vallées for Courchevel, Espace Killy for Val d'Isère), both hold the top of the chalet market, both offer Michelin dining. The difference is character — Courchevel is polished, moneyed and slightly showy; Val d'Isère is quieter, sportier and more understated. First-time luxury skiers usually prefer Courchevel; returning ski families often prefer Val d'Isère.

Choose Courchevel 1850 if the chalet, service and dining scene matter most, or if you want to arrive by private jet to the Altiport. Choose Val d'Isère if the ski (Espace Killy) is the primary driver and you prefer a more understated village.

Frequently asked questions

Which has better skiing?

Val d'Isère (Espace Killy) is arguably the stronger French ski area of the two — higher average altitude, more challenging terrain and the Tignes linkage giving 300km of piste from a 3,450m top. Courchevel (Trois Vallées) has more piste km overall (600km) and easier intermediate cruising.

Which is better for a non-skier?

Courchevel by a distance. Aquamotion spa, La Mangeoire nightclub, Michelin dining (three stars at Le 1947), shopping and the sun-terrace lunch scene at Le Chalet de Pierres. Val d'Isère has a quieter non-skier scene focused on spa and mountain lunches.

Can I arrive by private jet to either?

Courchevel Altiport takes rated aircraft (Phenom 300, Citation CJ3+, Falcon 900LX with the right crew and weather). Val d'Isère has no altiport — closest is Chambéry (45-min drive) or Geneva (2h). If jet-to-mountain matters, Courchevel wins.

Which is more expensive?

Courchevel's top-20 chalets typically run 10–20% above matched Val d'Isère product at the same week — reflecting deeper demand from UHNW returning clients. Both peak identically in structure: Xmas/NY and Feb half term at the top; mid-January and mid-March at the bottom.

Which has better snow late season?

Val d'Isère — Espace Killy's altitude (Val d'Isère base 1,850m, Tignes top 3,450m) delivers reliable snow through April in most years. Courchevel's north-facing Chenus and Loze pistes hold late-season well but not to Val d'Isère's altitude.

Can I combine both in one week?

Not practically — 90 minutes' drive apart and different ski areas. If you want variety across one week, Courchevel + Méribel + Val Thorens (all Trois Vallées) is straightforward. Val d'Isère + Tignes is one linked area.
