Monaco vs Porto Cervo for a yacht charter

Monaco and Porto Cervo are the two great Mediterranean scene ports for August. Monaco is the yacht-berthing epicentre — 700 berths at Port Hercule and Port de Fontvieille, the world's densest concentration of 40m+ yachts, Michelin dining and the Casino square. Porto Cervo, on Sardinia's Costa Smeralda, is quieter, warmer and better for actual cruising — the archipelago of La Maddalena is 30 minutes north, Corsica across a two-hour hop. Very different weeks.

Choose Monaco if the reason for the charter is the scene, the events (Grand Prix, Cannes, Monaco Yacht Show) or the connectivity to Nice for private jet arrivals. Choose Porto Cervo if the cruising itself is the point — August in the Costa Smeralda is unmatched.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Monaco berth really necessary during the Grand Prix?

It is the single defining feature of a Grand Prix yacht week. Every T-berth in Port Hercule with a race-track view books 9–12 months in advance and carries a 30–100% premium on baseline berthing. Without a berth, a GP-week yacht anchor 500m offshore misses the point.

How much do Porto Cervo berths cost in August?

Porto Cervo Marina peak August berthing runs roughly €1,500–€8,000 per night depending on LOA (length overall) — €1,500 for 30m yachts up to €5,000–€8,000 for 60m+. Costs are drawn from APA, not extra. Book 6–9 months out; the marina fills.

Can I combine Monaco and Porto Cervo in one week?

Yes — a common August routing is Monaco (2 nights) → Corsica (Calvi, 1 night) → Costa Smeralda (Porto Cervo + Maddalena, 3 nights) → return. Overnight passages are 8–12 hours; captains time them for calm sea and passenger comfort.

Which is better for children?

Porto Cervo. Better beaches (Cala di Volpe, Spiaggia del Principe), better anchorages for swimming, easier tender access. Monaco is largely concrete and street — two days is usually enough for most families.

How do I arrive by private jet?

For Monaco: private jet to Nice (30-min helicopter transfer to Monaco Heliport, or 45-min drive). For Porto Cervo: private jet to Olbia (15-min drive to marina) — Olbia is a proper business airport that comfortably takes ULR aircraft. See our private jet charter cost guide.

Which is quieter?

Porto Cervo, by a distance. Even in peak August, the Costa Smeralda feels more restrained than Monaco. Monaco is public — the whole point is being seen — and doesn't quiet down at night.
