Italy is a year-round destination but the best months are May–June and September–early October. Temperatures are 22–28°C, sea is warm enough for swimming from June, and the worst summer crowds are absent. August is brutal in inland cities (Rome, Florence empty out) but peak in coastal Italy (Amalfi, Sardinia, Puglia). Winter is exceptional for cities, food and ski.
May, June, September and early October are the best months — warm weather, lower crowds than peak summer and full restaurant calendars. Avoid August in cities; favour the coast.
