How long should you spend in Japan?

Japan rewards length. The flight is long, the country is dense in detail, and travel is so efficient that you can pack in more than you'd expect. 7 nights gives you Tokyo and Kyoto only — workable but rushed. 10 nights adds Hakone and a third stop. 12–14 nights is the sweet spot for first-timers. 18–21 nights opens up Hokkaido, Kyushu and the Setouchi art islands.

12–14 nights is ideal for a first trip — Tokyo, Kyoto, Hakone and one extra region (Hiroshima, Kanazawa or Naoshima). 7 nights for a city-focused taste; 18–21 nights for grand tours including Hokkaido or Kyushu.
