Kenya is the better choice for first-time safari travellers, families and anyone wanting to combine safari with a beach finale — the conservancies (Mara Naboisho, Ol Pejeta, Lewa) allow off-road driving and walking, transfers are short, and Diani or Lamu are 90 minutes by air. Tanzania is the better choice for travellers wanting raw wilderness scale, the full Migration cycle, Ngorongoro Crater and the long Serengeti horizon — paired with Zanzibar for the beach. For most first-time travellers, we recommend Kenya. For a second safari or a 12-night-plus journey, Tanzania.
Kenya is better for first-time safari, private conservancies and short safari-and-beach combinations. Tanzania is better for the Great Migration, wilderness scale and longer expeditions to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
